Self-Funded Model

Information

Definition

A Self-Funded Model is an EV charging commercial arrangement in which the site owner, host or customer funds the capital cost of the charging infrastructure rather than relying on CPO capital. The funder may own the charging assets and can separately procure installation, backend, maintenance, payment and CPO services. Commercial structures vary, and a self-funded site can still appoint a CPO to operate the network.

Why it matters

Self-funding generally gives the site owner greater control over charger selection, asset ownership, pricing, backend choice and future revenue, but it also places the upfront capital requirement and more of the commercial risk on the owner. It is particularly relevant to workplace, fleet, destination and other sites where the organisation wants to retain long-term control of the infrastructure.
