Mode 2 Charging

Information

Definition

Mode 2 charging uses a cable with an in-cable control and protection device between a socket outlet and the EV. It is normally assessed alongside charging mode, AC/DC architecture, power rating, connector type and how the charger shares or delivers power.

Why it matters

It may be used for occasional or portable charging, but is different from a dedicated wall-mounted or public Mode 3 charge point. For UK users, it affects charging speed, charger selection, vehicle compatibility and the way power is shared across outlets or vehicles.
