Allego plans €100 million UK expansion with up to 1400 ultra-rapid chargers

Allego has announced plans to invest €100 million–approximately £85 million–to install up to 1,400 ultra-rapid EV charging points across the UK by 2030.

The expansion will focus on high-traffic locations, major transport routes and densely populated urban areas, with London identified as one of the company’s priority markets.

Allego is now looking to work with retailers, hospitality operators, landowners and commercial property businesses interested in hosting public charging facilities.

Fully funded charging sites

Under Allego’s proposed partnership model, the company would finance, install, own and operate the charging infrastructure.

This could allow suitable site owners to introduce EV charging without funding the initial installation themselves. Host businesses may also benefit from lease income, increased visitor numbers and longer customer dwell times.

The investment is supported by infrastructure investor Meridiam. Allego has previously delivered similar partnerships with companies including IKEA, REWE and Burger King across Europe.

Growing Allego’s UK presence

Allego has operated in the UK since 2017 and manages a European network of more than 35,000 public charging points across 15 countries.

The planned investment would significantly increase the company’s presence in the UK, particularly within the rapidly growing ultra-rapid charging market.

However, the announcement refers to up to 1,400 charging points, meaning the final number will depend on securing suitable locations and progressing individual sites through development.

Focus on commercial host locations

Retail parks, hospitality venues, roadside businesses and other high-footfall commercial locations are likely to form an important part of the rollout.

These sites can offer drivers access to facilities while charging and provide host businesses with an additional reason for customers to visit or remain on-site for longer.

The success of the programme will depend on Allego securing suitable partnerships and identifying locations capable of supporting commercially viable charging installations.

If delivered in full, the rollout would represent a significant addition to the UK’s public charging network and strengthen Allego’s position within the country’s high-power charging sector.
