The site opened on 19 August and marks a further move by IONITY beyond its traditional motorway and intercity locations into high-demand urban charging.
Urban charging brings a different demand profile
Greenwich combines local residential demand with commercial and ride-hailing traffic. London also has a large number of drivers without access to private home charging, making urban public infrastructure more important than in areas with higher levels of off-street parking.
At a 12-bay site, the headline 400 kW charger rating is only one part of the picture. Utilisation, simultaneous charging demand, site power availability and vehicle turnover will determine how much energy the hub actually delivers over a day.
Uber partnership supports the London expansion
The Greenwich opening also sits within IONITY’s partnership with Uber. Uber drivers receive preferential charging arrangements, while IONITY has said the partnership helps it identify and support locations where high utilisation can justify new urban charging investment.
IONITY has previously said it plans multiple London locations over the coming years, making Greenwich the first part of a wider urban rollout rather than a one-off site.
The model will be worth watching because urban ultra-rapid hubs have to balance high land costs and constrained connections against the potential for much higher charger utilisation than lower-demand destination sites.
