Zapmap becomes another payment route
Zapmap users can add a debit or credit card to their account and pay through the app, or use the Zapmap charging card. Charging history, receipts and live status information are also available through the platform.
InstaVolt describes the change as an additional payment choice. Its network continues to support its own app, while InstaVolt chargers also provide direct contactless card payment.
Payment choice and roaming-style access are different things
The update is a useful example of the different ways drivers can access public charging. Direct contactless payment allows ad-hoc charging without joining an app ecosystem, while an eMSP-style service such as Zapmap can give drivers one account and payment method across multiple networks.
Zapmap says its payment solution now covers more than 80,000 chargers across more than 50 networks.
For drivers, the advantage is not that one payment method replaces the others, but that more than one route is available if a preferred app, card or contactless option is more convenient.
