Early public charging assets are reaching replacement age
The council says it is now seeking a provider to supply modern replacement infrastructure and is directing drivers to other public networks in the meantime.
The withdrawal is notable because much of the charging industry still focuses on net additions. As networks installed during the first major public-charging rollout age, replacement cycles are becoming a larger part of procurement and operating budgets.
The wider Revive programme originally used a mixture of Siemens rapid chargers and Alfen AC equipment, with the network operating through the GeniePoint platform.
Replacement procurement can reuse more than the charger
Removing a charger does not necessarily mean the entire site has to be rebuilt. Existing grid connections, ducts, civils and parking layouts may still have value if they remain suitable for the replacement equipment.
The next procurement will therefore be important not only for charger choice, but for how much of the existing site infrastructure can be retained and how future hardware replacement is built into the operating model.
