The app, which is available to Motability Scheme customers, can search more than 80,000 chargepoints.
Drivers can check more than charger availability
Users can view reviews from other Scheme customers, live charger information and accessibility details before travelling to a charging site.
At some locations the app now includes charging-bay width. It can also show whether a charger is easy to access and whether accessible toilets are available nearby.
Live status information indicates whether chargers are available, busy or out of service.
Accessibility information needs to be visible before arrival
Physical accessibility measures at a charging site are only useful if drivers can identify suitable locations before starting a journey.
Information such as bay width, charger position, nearby facilities and access restrictions therefore has a role alongside live status, power and pricing data.
Motability’s update also allows users to leave their own reviews, adding practical information that may not be obvious from a conventional charging map.
The wider question is data standardisation
The next step for the charging sector is whether accessibility information can be made more consistent across CPOs and charging platforms.
If fields such as bay dimensions, kerb height, charger reach and accessible facilities become standardised and machine-readable, drivers would be less dependent on individual apps collecting the same information separately.
