Tesla’s US shop now lists the Outlet Adapter as compatible with Model Y Premium, Model Y Performance and Cybertruck. The adapter connects to a Gen 3 Mobile Connector and provides a 120 V, 20 A outlet with a maximum output of 2.4 kW.
The adapter turns the charge port into a power source
To use the feature, the Mobile Connector is plugged into the vehicle’s charge port and the Outlet Adapter is fitted to the other end. Appliances and other compatible loads can then draw power from the vehicle battery.
This is vehicle-to-load, or V2L. The vehicle is exporting energy, but only to a connected appliance or load through the adapter.
V2L is not the same as V2H or V2G
The Model Y support should not be described as home backup or grid export. Tesla’s Powershare home-backup and grid-support functions remain associated with Cybertruck, which uses additional equipment to supply a building and, where supported, interact with the grid.
The terminology matters because all three functions involve energy leaving the vehicle, but they have very different electrical and regulatory requirements:
V2L supplies individual appliances or loads. V2H supplies a building installation. V2G operates in parallel with the electricity network and can export energy to the grid.
Availability is market and vehicle dependent
The 2.4 kW implementation is based on North American 120 V equipment and should not be assumed to be available on UK Model Y vehicles.
Tesla’s current US shop lists Model Y Premium as compatible, although some Model Y owner-manual pages still refer only to Model Y Performance. Owners should check the current Tesla compatibility information for their specific vehicle before purchasing the adapter.
